Winter Writing Competition

Shake off the chill of winter by flexing your creative muscles with Port Phillip Libraries’ annual Writing Competition! 

Go in the draw to win some amazing prizes, as well as for the chance for your story to be added to the library’s collection! 

Let loose your creativity in this competition: we’re accepting short stories, poems, graphic novels, comics, zines, and interactive fiction, all based on visual prompts. 

Primary School Category

If you’re aged between 6 – 11, this is the competition for you.

Write up to 100 words inspired by this image of dogs in snow. 

Winning submissions in the Primary School category can win:

  • Melbourne Museum Family Annual Membership

Secondary School Category

If you’re between the ages of 12 – 18, enter our secondary school competition!

Write between 100 - 500 words, using this image of a cottage with a dark background as your inspiration.

Winning submissions in the Secondary School category can win:

Submission Guidelines

  • Submissions can be dropped off in-person to any Port Phillip library branch or emailed to
  • Submissions are accepted 1 June 2024 – 31 July 2024
  • Primary submissions must be 100 words or less and be created by someone between 6 – 11 years of age
  • Secondary submissions must be between 100 – 500 words and be created by someone between 12 – 18 years of age
  • Accepted file types: Word document and/or PDF. For interactive fiction, please provide a link to your host site.
