Artist Talk: Konrad Winkler

Join us at St Kilda Library as local artist Konrad Winkler shares with us the stories that accompany the photos in his new photography book, "N.T. 74 – 77" a memoir and time capsule of the Northern Territory fifty years ago.  

Winkler was given free rein to roam the outback and towns of the Territory to photograph whatever seemed interesting and relevant to the job of creating an archive of photos for the Curriculum Branch of the Education Department. 

Explore a unique journey through 89 images and 16 pages of stories from a free and easy world. From teaching in the remote desert community of Areyonga/Utju to living in Darwin in the aftermath of Cyclone Tracy, where home and office blended into one — including sleeping behind a photocopier! These remarkable experiences offer a glimpse into life in Australia’s outback and a city recovering from disaster.

About the author

Konrad has been exhibiting for the last 20 years in solo and group exhibitions, both locally and internationally, and his work is held in several private and public collections including the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin; Art Gallery of Ballarat; Warrnambool Art Gallery; Horsham Regional Art Gallery; Cunningham Dax Collection, Melbourne; Maroondah City Council Art Collection and The Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne.
