Communication Boards
What is a communication board?
A communication board is a visual tool that helps people share information, ask questions and express needs. It uses simple words, symbols and pictures to support communication.
How can it be used?
Visitors can point to a word or symbol to let staff know what they need. Staff can also use the board to ask questions and offer support. This can help when someone finds speaking, reading or understanding language difficult.
Why it matters
Communication boards help make the library more inclusive. They support people with different communication needs so everyone can access services and feel welcome.

We have Communications boards like this at all of our libraries.

Visual Stories
They can help to improve understanding of what will happen, provide information about social cues and acceptable behaviours, reduce anxiety, and enhance executive functioning skills. They have been shown to be particularly helpful for people who are neurodivergent but can be used by anyone who would benefit from additional preparation and support.
You can download a copy of our Visual Stories below or ask for a copy at each of our branches. Visit our Visual Stories webpage for more information.
