World War II in Port Melbourne: 1939 – 1945

On display at the Port Phillip Heritage Centre, Emerald Hill Library — until 12 October

Discovered in a Japanese tunnel near Rabaul during World War II, a map of Port Melbourne—marked with Japanese annotations—was found by a local soldier and brought home as a curious and powerful reminder of the war. A reproduction of this remarkable map is now on display, along with the story of its discovery.

This exhibition features a range of fascinating artefacts from Port Melbourne during the Second World War, offering a unique glimpse into the local wartime experience.

This display is proudly presented by the Port Melbourne Historical Society, in partnership with the Port Phillip Heritage Centre.

This map of Port Melbourne is available for viewing and was discovered in Papua New Guinea during the second World War by an Australian Solider.
