One in a million refugee stories with Shankar

Join us for an inspiring Refugee Week event featuring refugee ambassador and advocate Shankar.

Thursday 18 June | 6 pm to 7 pm | St Kilda Library

Over thirty years ago, Shankar’s family was forced to flee Sri Lanka after his father, a university lecturer, was detained and interrogated due to suspicion surrounding his engagement with Tamil students and activists. The incident took place at the notorious fourth floor of Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigation Department, known for torture and unexplained deaths. Fortunately, he survived, but the family faced ongoing fear and oppression.

In 1987, they resettled in Australia through sponsorship and were welcomed by a warm, supportive community. Shankar remembers the kindness shown to them: gifts from church groups, essential household items, and a sense of safety in their new Mount Waverley home, a social housing property managed by the Council and a church, which later became their family home.

For the past fifteen years, Shankar has dedicated himself to fostering inclusive neighbourhoods, schools, and workplaces. He now serves as a Commissioner for the Victorian Multicultural Commission and Deputy Chairperson of the Migrant Workers Centre

This event is run in partnership with the Refugee Council of Australia as part of the powerful Refugee Stories for Change program

About Refugee Week 2026 – “A Million Stories”

This year’s theme, A Million Stories, marks a major national milestone: the issuing of one million permanent humanitarian visas since 1947. Refugee Week 2026 invites us to reflect on those million unique journeys, threads woven together into the rich tapestry of modern Australia. The theme celebrates the power of storytelling, encourages deeper understanding, and unites communities around a shared legacy of welcome and hope.

What to Expect

Join us for an uplifting evening of storytelling, reflection, and community connection. Shankar will share his family’s journey, the lessons learned along the way, and his vision for a more inclusive Australia, one shaped by the courage and contribution of people from refugee backgrounds.
