About the event

Acclaimed illustrator and writer, Matt Shanks, is coming to the library with an hour-long drawing workshop to inspire and engage children aged 6 to 14.

A kind, gentle mentor for creatives, Matt helps children interested in illustration or storytelling. 

Drawing supplies are provided. Don’t miss out!

Matt will also be introducing his new book "When the Mountain Wakes" to everyone at the event. We have lots of copies on order for when the book is released in September. You can use the link above to reserve a copy this wonderful new book for when it's released.

This event is proudly presented by the Friends of Emerald Hill Library as part of our Spring School Holiday Program for 2025. Over the years they have hosted numerous events with many wonderful authors, and we thank them for their ongoing support of our Emerald Hill Library.

About the author

Matt Shanks is an internationally published and critically acclaimed author/illustrator of over twenty picture books. Eric the Postie (2018) and Queen Celine (2019) were both awarded Notables by the CBCA for Picture Book of The Year.

His books include Rosie the Rhinoceros, written by Australian rock legend Jimmy Barnes. It also includes Herman Crab, written by one of Australia’s favourite comedians Peter Helliar. Matt is a two-time fellow of the May Gibbs Children’s Literature Trust and an Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation ambassador.

He works primary in watercolour and ink. He lives on Boon Wurrung land with his partner and cat.
