John E. S. Vardy was born in England in 1841 and died in St Kilda in 1882. He arrived in Melbourne with his family in the first half of 1869. From 1873 to 1875 he was working as a surveyor with the St Kilda Council. As a surveyor he is best remembered for his maps of early St Kilda, known as the Vardy maps.
The Vardy maps are the original plans of the Borough of St Kilda surveyed and compiled under the direction of the Borough Council by J.E.S. Vardy, surveyor in 1873. The 42 maps were lithographed and published by Hamel & Ferguson, Melbourne.
