Children's collections

Different children have different needs and we have the collections to match! The collection codes in square brackets at the start of each section are on the little white square labels on the spines of our books. You can use them to help decide whether a book is right for its intended reader.

[FBB] - First books for babies

Babies’ and toddlers’ introduction to books. Mostly board book format with strong contrast colours and minimal text. They include nursery rhymes, farm animals, trucks, daily routines, photography and illustration. Popular touch and feel opportunities for tactile interaction is offered as well as surprise flaps, both encouraging the physical exploration of the book and its pages. Ages: 0-2 years.

[B] - Beginner books

For those starting to explore reading. Books that facilitate reading practice that include some scaled readers, a mix of simple fiction and non-fiction. Content may range from a few words to more extended sentences. Ages: 4-7 years

[P] - Picture books

A wide range of picture books featuring classic, contemporary, Australian and international titles. Ages: 2-7 years.

[BB] - Big books

Large format picture books. (38-50 cm in height). Good for group sharing and story times. Ages: 2-7 years.

[NS] - Next step

A range of simple first chapter books for newly independent readers. Ages: 6-9 years.

[POR] - Picturebooks for older readers

A wide range of books with extended texts that include a large proportion of illustration or photography. Themes can be quite sophisticated and confronting. They include lavishly illustrated versions of fairytales, myths and folktales. Ages: 5+

[C FIC] - Children's fiction

A broad range of literature, sometimes illustrated. Ages: 9 - 15

[C FIC] "Classics" - Children's classics

Australian and international books that are recognised as standard works ranging from The Wind in the Willows to Storm Boy. Open to all ages. Nostalgic adults welcome!

[SN] - Specific needs

Picture books which feature first experiences, such as learning to use the potty, moving house, starting school or the birth of a new sibling. Used by parents or carers to familiarise their child with a new experience. Ages: 2-8 years.

[FEST] - Festival books/DVDs

A range of picture books, dvd, audio formats featuring religious festivals and traditional celebrations. These are set aside to be displayed for borrowing in in time for the particular festival or religious celebration. For example, Easter, Christmas or Hanukkah. Ages: 2-10 years.
